What is the Ideal Age of Children to Appreciate a Toy Kitchen?

As a parent, I am quite fond of toys that encourage imaginary play. It’s believed to enthuse children and help cultivate their ingenuity and inventive juices. While I’ve been guilty of using the TV as a babysitter before just as many other parents have, it’s important to understand the significance of keeping our children’s minds challenged and engaged when ever possible. One favorite toy that helps to augment a child’s artistic and innovative side is a play kitchen. But is there an age that is most appropriate for a child to begin exploring the idea of cooking and/or is there such an age where the child will no longer recognize the value of a play kitchen?

As with anything there is never a hard and fast rule when it comes to the development of our children. Yet, it was a question I wanted to address because I often come across such an inquiry on various forums and blogs. Most often people are wondering if their child might be too young to play with a toy kitchen but on occasion, people ask if their child may be too old to appreciate such a gift.

So you may be asking, what is the best age for play kitchens and what are the reasons behind that answer? It can be concluded that the ideal age to fully utilize and appreciate a toy kitchen is between two and half and 5 and half years old. Acquiring a play kitchen for your child under the age of two is certainly a prerogative but don’t anticipate there to be much awareness until they are closer to two and a half. Imaginary play is a concept that is developed in children over the age of two and children younger than that are just not ready cognitively to grasp this idea of pretend play. Although they may be captivated by all the bells and whistles, literally, they won’t connect to the imaginative power of a play kitchen until they are a bit older.

Ok, but what about the kids that are over the age of five; would they have an attraction to such a toy? At this age, expect them to be more allured by the idea of cooking with real food. They are ready to experiment using genuine ingredients while creating their own master piece. In conclusion, it seems to logical that the ideal ages to truly appreciate a play kitchen and benefit from imaginary play is between the ages of two and five; a limited window maybe but a great instrument none the less.

As I said, all children are diverse and some may really take pleasure in a toy kitchen outside of the ages I listed but for the most part, I think, as a parent you will be more satisfied with your purchase if you stay with in these guidelines.

Children wooden toys are toys which are made using a natural product as opposed to a product like plastic which is a product that we are trying to recycle but nevertheless remains a product which costs less to produce new than to recycle. Let’s think of a few differences between the two. Plastic toys can break easily and the edges could harm little children. Wooden toys, on the other hand, are more durable. Do War Toys for Children Cause Future Wars?

If you go to any toy store or even look at the shelves at Wal-Mart in the toy section you will see various war toys. Things like plastic machine guns, plastic army hats, jet fighter planes and army tanks. When we were growing up there were G.I. Joe’s and other such war toys.

I can remember as a team building nearly every 1:72 scale plastic model airplane and World War II Army tank and yet I do not believe that this caused me to love war. Nevertheless the question has been brought up by some folks that say these toys do indeed glorify war; indeed and maybe they do, I am not a psychologist.

But do war toys of today’s children cause wars? I doubt that, as we are not necessarily a nation which runs around causing wars, but rather has been put into a position of being the head police dog to prevent catastrophic leadership failure resulting in human rights abuses, losses of freedom and tyrannical dictators run a muck.

One thing is for sure however and that is that these toys are much more real life and detailed than anything our parents had. Should our children be subjected to war toys, so they can understand that sometimes the price of freedom costs a lot more than we think? Consider this and debate it amongst yourselves if you like.

Environmentally Friendly Toys – Green Playing For Children

It amazes me how many children’s toys are environmentally unfriendly. Often made of cheap materials and not made for a long life, they end up in the garbage and landfills within a year or two if lucky. And many are made of plastics, including PVC which may have health issues. Many toys also require batteries, and although there is nothing wrong with the occasional battery powered toy, they clearly aren’t as environmentally friendly as say a solar powered, hand powered, or a toy powered by the imagination.

In looking for green toys, I look first for natural ingredients. Solid wood is high on the list as are natural fabrics. They are much better than plastics, especially soft plastics that might have PVC.  Stuffed toys are also good too, although check what they are made of.

Well made durable toys are a top choice. You can often easily tell a cheap, shabbily made toy. They may be fun for a while, but won’t last long with typical child behavior, whereas it’s tough to destroy a wooden block for example.

Toys made of local materials, perhaps by local artisans, are best from the environmental standpoint. They are certainly much better than if the raw materials were shipped over seas and then the finished toys were shipped back, which is sometime the case. You may find locally made toys, usually high quality, at local fairs and even farmers markets sometimes.

Recycling toys is also very environmentally friendly. We have several plastic large toys, like slides and play houses, that although maybe we never would have bought, we got for free from someone who was done with them. Better they get reused than fill a landfill!
